The numeracy program at the primary level focuses on improving math outcomes in each of our school's classes. Throughout the year, the whole school focuses on three mains goals.
The first of these goals is to determine the numeracy level of each of our students so that teachers can tailor programs for the coming years to ensure success for all. In doing this students receive extra support where required whilst those performing at high-levels can be extended further.
The second goal is to improve all students’ fluency with multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition facts. Each classroom now use daily “beat the bomb” challenges where students have to race the clock to answer as many fast math facts as they can.
Our third goal and focus for numeracy has been to improve students’ ability to tell time and to work with money. These two key areas are crucial to students’ success in later years at schooling but, more importantly, they are valuable life skills that all students at our school can take into the real world.
The Murri School is also an active participant in an online math program called "Mathletics" that provides tailored math programs for each of our primary students. This program is designed to be engaging for students whilst giving them the maximum amount of math practice. Mathletics can also be accessed any time from home if students have a computer available.
For the secondary school, our math department has focused on inquiry-based learning which has been a great success. Inquiry-based learning requires high school students complete math tasks that are centered on real world applications. Therefore the students are not only learning valuable math but also learning how to use and apply it in their lives.
